Campers experience Holi Powder from India |
Curriculum Goals:
-
To give kinesthetic learners a chance to access the information in an experiential way to provide “deep” learning.
- To provide daily fun opportunities for physical activity through games and active play from world cultures.
Excerpts from The Culture Camp Curriculum Dance and Activities sections:
Activity Title: My Own Personal Walkabout
Goals: Campers will go on a walkabout around the camp, observing everything, and draw a map of what they experienced. Then they will draw a walkabout route of their own lives and share it with the others.
Process:
-
Counselor talks about song lines, and walkabouts, and campers spend some time imagining their own walkabout.
-
They take a walk with the counselor around the camp, and draw a map once they return. Then they draw a map of the route they would take on their own personal Walkabout.
-
They share their maps with the other campers.
Activity Title: Greek Ball
Goals: Campers will compete in a game as if they were in the original Olympics.
Process:
-
Game can be played either outdoors or indoors. Draw large square on pavement 15 ft to a side.
-
Divide class in 2 teams. Line up on opposite sides along the line. Put large ball in center of square.
-
Counselor picks one camper to be the referee (rotate this job every turn). That camper calls out "Greek". At that moment, players at opposite corners run to the middle where ball is and try to grab it and throw it over the other team's base line. Team tries to prevent it going over by bumping it back or catching it.
-
Team gets points for ball over the other team's line. Rotate players every time so different campers get to run for the ball.
